It was the beginning of a great war that brought death, devastation and finally the victory and power to United States. Partial victory for Americans appeared when Japanese capital Tokyo was bombed. It was less of a material loss but huge in terms of psychological attack. It was followed by the Battle of Coral Sea in May 1942 and after that the decisive Battle of Midway Island took place. U.S. aircraft carriers destroyed three out of four Japanese carriers that sabotaged their further plans of invasion and they adopted a defensive strategy. Tension with Germans also became manifold after devastation of American merchant trade with Britain as U-boats destroyed more than 4,700 merchant ships and 200 warships. Stalin stressed the Allied invasion of France while Roosevelt urged troop’s deployment in North Africa. Allied leaders planned invasion of Italy in 1943 but downfall of Mussolini took eleven months and cost was heavy for American. Despite zero physical harm at home ground, war changed America completely. Millions of Americans worked overseas, women replaced men in factories and automobile factories became weapon producing units. Mobilization for war resulted in a thriving economy. Down Syndrome is a chromosomal condition related to chromosome 21. It affects 1 in 800 to 1 in 1000 born infants. People who have Down Syndrome have learning difficulties, mental retardation, a different facial appearance, and poor muscle tone (hypotonia) in infancy. Individuals with Down Syndrome also have an increased risk for having heart defects, digestive problems such as â€Å"gastroesophageal reflux or celiac disease†, and hearing loss. Some people who have Down Syndrome have â€Å"low activity of the thyroid gland (hypothyroidism)† an organ in the lower neck that produces hormones. Down Syndrome can be diagnosed in infancy based on the characteristic medical findings. When Down Syndrome is assumed in a person, a genetic test called a â€Å"chromosome analysis† is performed on a blood or skin sample to look for an extra chromosome 21 (trisomy 21). Trisomy 21 means that each cell in the body has three copies of chromosome 21 instead of the usual two copies. Having an extra number 21 genetic material interrupts the normal course of development, causing the characteristic medical features of Down Syndrome. Some people who have Down Syndrome have an extra number 21 chromosome in only some of their bodys cells. This type of Down Syndrome is called Mosaic Down syndrome. A small number of individuals have Down Syndrome because part of chromosome 21 becomes attached to another chromosome before or at the time of the start. These beings have two copies of chromosome 21, and extra substance from chromosome 21 that is attached to another chromosome. The chromosomes of parents of a child with Down Syndrome caused by a â€Å"translocation† are studied to see whether the translocation was inherited. When there is a heart defect currently in an infant with Down syndrome, the infant is referred to a â€Å"pediatric cardiologist† for medical attention or to a â€Å"pediatric cardiac surgeon for early surgical repair. Some infants with Down Syndrome have difficulties with swallowing or they may have blockages in their bowels. Surgery can be performed to correct these problems. After they are corrected, they usually cause no further health issues. Children with Down syndrome may have â€Å"frequent colds and sinus and ear infections. † These are treated early and aggressi vely to prevent hearing loss and chronic infections. Low thyroid levels are more common in infants who have Down syndrome. It is recommended that â€Å"thyroid level testing† be performed at least yearly. Some infants with Down syndrome have eye problems such as cataracts (cloudy lenses) or crossed eyes (strabismus). Surgery can help with these problems. Sucking problems related to low muscle tone or heart problems may make breast feeding difficult to begin with. â€Å"Occupational therapists, speech therapists, breast feeding consultants and support groups usually have exact sources for the mothers of infants with Down syndrome. † Intelligence in individuals with Down syndrome ranges from low normal to very slow to learn. At birth it is not possible to tell the level of intelligence a baby with Down syndrome will have. Preschool programs for children with Down syndrome include â€Å"physical, occupational, speech and educational therapies†. Many adults with Down syndrome have jobs and live independently. Most cases of Down syndrome are not inherited, but occur as random events during the formation of reproductive cells. A mistake in cell division called non-disjunction results in reproductive cells with an unusual number of chromosomes. For example, an egg or sperm cell may gain an extra copy of chromosome 21, if one of these uncharacteristic reproductive cells contributes to the genetic makeup of a child, the child will have an extra chromosome 21 in each of the bodys cells. Mosaic Down syndrome is also not inherited. It occurs as a random mistake during cell division early in fetal development. As a result, some of the bodys cells have the usual two copies of chromosome 21, and other cells have three copies of the chromosome. Translocation Down syndrome can be inherited. An unaffected person can carry a rearrangement of genetic material between chromosome 21 and another chromosome. The theme of dutiful love is shown mostly between those people who are obligated to show love for each other because of status. Capulet speaks to Tybalt to calm him; he says, Content thee, gentle coz. This shows compassion and dutiful love, an obligated love between family members, it shows care and respect between the two characters. The nurse describes Lady Capulet as the lady of the house, and a good lady, and a wise and virtuous. The nurse is obligated to say this because of her status, she cannot speak ill of her employees because they provide for her. She must compliment Lady Capulet because she is of higher status than her, even if she doesnt believe this is a true description. When Romeo and Juliet meet alone the theme of sexual love is revealed. Romeo persuades Juliet to kiss her, she is unsure but Romeo assures her that he could smooth the rough touch of his hand with a gentle kiss. They kiss and passion is shown when Romeo insists, Give me my sin again, he enjoys being close to Juliet and touching her showing a strong theme of sexual attraction as well as true love. Loves as a religion is also used in the passage where the two lovers are alone; they make many references to religion and compare their meeting to a pilgrim searching for a saint. This theme is shown visually by the costumes worn in the Lurhman film, as Juliet is dressed as an angel and Romeo as a knight, the modern equivalent of the pilgrim and saint. Juliet reminds Romeo that they should both be devoted to their religion and God; she comments that their lips should not be used for kissing but in prayer. This shows that religion was very important to these people and they strived to be good Christians that spent a lot of time praying to god and doing their duties. The theme of parents and children is shown in instances where people where identifying strangers. The nurse identifies a man not by his name but by telling her he is the son and heir of old tiberio, the parentage were the only people who could have a very high status and so were known to more people. When the nurse identifies Romeo to Juliet she describes him as the only son of your great enemy, the feud between the two families meant that Romeo couldnt be seen as anything but an enemy to the family. This shows that children were expected to take up the ideas and beliefs of their parents and not rebel against them; they had to obey their parents and have the utmost respect for them. The enmity in this scene is supplied by the anger of Tybalt at Romeos appearance at his uncles party, it seems that he cannot let it rest and is determined to get revenge. Tybalt uses words such as slave and villain to describe Romeo, he insults him without a very just cause, he believes that Romeo has come to fleer and scorn at these people, but Tybalt does not know this for sure. Tybalt has inherited the beliefs of his parents and enjoys supporting them because he likes to pick fights and start trouble between the two households. In the Luhrman film Tybalts costume is a devil, this brings out the image of evil and enmity inside him. Premonition is important in this play; it leaves the audience in suspense and with a feeling of anticipation. The words that characters say can foretell what may happen in the rest of the play. This is an eerie feeling of premonition because in the end result her death comes very soon after she is married. It is fate that Romeo came to the party and met Juliet, and fate that brought them together. Juliet believes also that it was fate that meant she must love a loathed enemy. She believes it happened for a reason, maybe to unite the two families and stop the quarrelling, but that is not too obvious yet. Romeo tells us my life is my foes debt, when he finds out that Juliet is a Capulet. He owes his life to his enemy and so this leads to the fact that in the end he does give up his own life because of his love for a woman who was seen as an enemy. Light vs. dark is shown when Capulet is speaking to the crowd, he keeps shouting more light, more light. This shows that he is trying to block out the evil in his house and in his own personality and show a light side where there was no quarrelling or brawling. I also believe he may have been trying to block out the fact that he had a premonition that death and destruction would take hold very soon. The way that characterisation and motives are used in this scene to provoke emotive responses from the audience and build up a sense of familiarity to them is very effective. This technique makes us more involved in the play and more engrossed in the situation. I will show how the characters Capulet, Romeo, Tybalt and Juliet, and their characters help to make this drama effective. Capulet The man with a split personality, words such as cheerly, my hearts portray him as hospitable, cheerful, a gentleman, genial, affable, generous, entertaining and a good host. He must be liked by everyone and seen as a good man so that the prince will not think ill of him, and maybe even favour the house of Capulet. He needs a high status, so that he is respected. He puts on such a front when entertaining, and before his row with Tybalt we see that he cares dearly for his daughter when he tells Paris that he cannot marry her until she is 16. After the party I suspect he knows about the way in which Romeo and Juliet met and has a premonition about the future, and so insists that Juliet marries Paris as soon as possible. He is brutal and tells her that he will throw her out of their house and disown her if she does not obey him. This shows that Capulet is also stubborn and believes that he can change fate and destiny. He thinks highly of himself and is very angry that Juliet id not willing to obey him. Capulet gets very angry with Tybalt and speaks to him in a very different way to the way he speaks to his guests; this reveals his other side. This moment uses irony, as Capulet is telling Tybalt off for having a short temper, whereas soon after he is in a rage with Juliet. During his argument with Tybalt he goes back and forth between talking to the guests and then Tybalt, this shows clearly the divide in his personality. Tybalt A man to whom pride is very important, and he makes many references to Romeo sneering at them and making fun of their family. He cant stand the thought of any one thinking ill of his family and is proud of himself, not unlike his uncle Capulet. He is very opinionated and strongly believes that the houses of Capulet and Montague should not mix. In Tybalts soliloquy he is bitter and resentful, he hopes that Capulet will side with him on this view and tries to persuade Capulet to his point of view, and at first it is not clear what Capulet will say. This gives an element of suspense to the scene and what lies ahead, which works well to catch an audiences attention. He is determined to honour his family in any way possible and believes that if he were to kill him he would hold it not a sin. He is defiant and even when Capulet tells him to let him alone he is determined to have his own way. And his second soliloquy talks about how the intrusion into the party that now seeming sweet convert to bitterest gall. He is determined to have his revenge and pick a fight with Romeo, which is a premonition of things to come. He storms away from the scene angry and defiant. Romeo The dreamer, whos in love with love. Romeo comes to the party to search for his beloved Rosalyn because he stumbled upon a guest list with her name on it, in an earlier scene. Romeo is an idealistic and Romantic man, using a sonnet to describe his love at first sight, Juliet. He says that she is too beautiful for this earth, and denies that he has ever loved before. Capulet talks about Romeo in a very respectful and complimentary way saying that Verona brags of him to be a virtuous and well-governed youth, this shows us that Romeo was well known and respected throughout the city he lived in. Romeos motives for loving Juliet are a lot different from his motives for loving Rosalyn because when he finds out that Juliet is a Capulet he is devastated and says he owes his life to enemy my life is my foes debt. This shows us that he would die for Juliet and that he sees her as the motive for him living. He is intense in the way that he expresses his sexual attraction to Juliet, using metaphors about religion and intertwining the two aspects of love. Juliet An innocent and naive character. The scene is split into six sections; juxtaposition is used a lot, to give the audience an idea of the whole scene from lots of different angles and point of views. The first section sets the scene and makes the audience think about the mood and atmosphere in the Capulet household. Excitement, chaos, stress and exasperation are all moods that spring to mind when reading this first section. Costumes of the servants are ragged and cheap looking, outlining the fact that they are not as wealthy as their employees and any of the guests, and so giving the audience an idea of a split society. On the stage there are lots of pots and pans, dirty dishes and mess, people running about the stage cleaning and tidying up (showing the moods of chaos and stress). This section is essential to the plot as it is the first time that Romeo sees Juliet, and their meeting and falling in love is the main plot. The audience doesnt know how this romance is going to end, but the audience knows something that the characters dont; the fact that these two people are meant to be enemies. Section four reveals Capulets other side, and introduces Tybalt. The heated argument between Tybalt and his uncle, about Romeos presence at their party, takes place. Tybalt would begin stood behind Romeo when saying his first soliloquy, staring straight ahead, anger trembling in his voice. Capulet notices and approaches him, and then when Tybalt will not listen, Capulet starts to walk in and out of the guests with Tybalt following behind, pleading with him. Tybalt spits out the words Montague and Romeo to show the hate he has for what the represent. At first the audience doesnt know how Capulet will react so suspense is created. Section five where Romeo and Juliet first kiss. They stand in the place that Romeo first saw Juliet dancing, hidden from the guests and the rest of the party. A spotlight is on the two lovers, to highlight their importance. As they speak they gaze into each others eyes. This scene shows the audience that Juliet returns the love that Romeo has for her and makes the audience wonder what their reactions will be when they find out about each others backgrounds. Section six shows the reaction of Romeo and of Juliet when they find out about each others families. Romeo stands in the place where he was stood with Juliet to speak with the nurse, glancing from behind a curtain to watch Juliet. Romeo and friends leave through a stage door at the rear of the stage, speaking with Capulet as they leave. Juliet then returns to the nurse to ask for Romeos name, they stand at the front left of the stage and watch the men go out of the door. Juliet falls to the floor in anguish when she finds out that Romeo is a Montague, she is devastated. This leaves suspense for the audience and questions such as: will they be able to be together? Will Juliet have to marry Paris? Will they ever see each other again? There are four key speeches in this scene; they all relate to important aspects of the plot and reveal details to the audience, or answer questions that have been raised earlier. Capulet makes the first key speech. This is blank verse, showing that its normal conversation and that Capulet is an important character in this play. Repetition is used many times with the words tis gone to emphasize them. He uses wit and comedy to get the audiences attention, and asks questions to involve them. Romeo makes the second key speech. This is a sonnet that has a regular metre, and uses rhyme. It uses a simile As a rich jewel in an ethiops ear, this helps the audience understand the emotions of Romeo. It also uses personification cheek of night. Imagery is used when he is trying to describe the beauty of Juliet, he describes her as a snowy dove trooping with crows, this gives us a comparison of a pure bird with black and ugly birds. This speech is important because it is the first time Romeo sees Juliet and the beginning of the main plot. Tybalt makes the third key speech. This soliloquy reveals to the audience Tybalts deepest thoughts and a glimpse of what is to come in the rest of the play. It uses rhyme and lots of words with short vowel sounds so that it sounds harsh and abrupt. This speech symbolises the reason for Mercutio and Tybalts deaths. The nurse makes the third key speech. This is normal prose and blank verse, the nurse uses the rule of three to describe Lady Capulet And a good lady, and a wise, and virtuous. This again highlights the fact that the nurse has dutiful love for Lady Capulet. This is when Romeo finds out that Juliet is a Capulet and the start of Romeo and Juliets secret relationship. I think that this scene is an effective piece of drama because it captures your attention, the juxtaposition keeps you aware of what is going on at all times and keeps you focused. New characters and personalities keep you interested. Questions are raised in your mind, and this makes you concentrate so that you can get answers to those questions. I think that this play is basically about love, and morals and circumstances that can come between people and societies.

The Ethics of Lying Is lying ever morally permissible? While lying can be seen as a threat to civil society, there seem to be several instances in which lying seems the most intuitively moral option. Besides, if a sufficiently broad definition of lying is adopted, it seems utterly impossible to escape lies, either because of instances of self-deception or because of the social construction of our persona. Let’s look more closely into those matters. What lying is, first of all, is controversial. Recent discussion of the topic has identified four standard conditions for lying, but none of them seems to actually work. Keeping in mind the difficulties in providing an exact definition of lying, let’s start facing the foremost moral question regarding it: Should lying always be despised? A Threat to Civil Society? Lying has been seen as a threat to civil society by authors such as Kant. A society that tolerates lies – the argument goes – is a society in which trust is undermined and, with it, the sense of collectivity. In the United States, where lying is regarded as a major ethical and legal fault, the trust in government may well be greater than in Italy, where lying is far more tolerated. Machiavelli, among others, used to reflect on the importance of trust centuries ago. Yet, he also concluded that deceiving is, in some cases, the best option. How can that be? White Lies A first, less controversial sort of cases in which lying is tolerated includes so-called white lies. In some circumstances, it seems better to tell a small lie than having someone worrying unnecessarily, or becoming sad, or losing momentum. While actions of this sort seem hard to endorse from the standpoint of Kantian ethics, they provide one of the most clear-cut arguments in favor of Consequentialism. Lying for a Good Cause Famed objections to the Kantian absolute moral ban of lying, however, come also from the consideration of more dramatic scenarios. Here is one type of scenario. If by telling a lie to some Nazi soldiers during World War II, you could have saved someone’s life, without any other additional harm being inflicted, it seems that you ought to have lied. Or, consider the situation in which someone outraged, out of control, asks you where she can find an acquaintance of yours so that she can kill that acquaintance; you know where the acquaintance is and lying will help your friend calm down: should you tell the truth? Once you start thinking about it, there are plenty of circumstances where lying seems to be morally excusable. And, indeed, it is typically morally excused. Now, of course, there is a problem with this: who is to say whether the scenario excuses you from lying? Self-Deception There are plenty of circumstances in which humans seem to convince themselves of being excused from taking a certain course of action when, to the eyes of their peers, they actually are not. A good part of those scenarios may involve that phenomenon called self-deception. Lance Armstrong may have just provided one of the starkest cases of self-deception we can offer. Yet, who is to say that you are self-deceiving yourself? By wanting to judge the morality of lying, we may have led ourselves into one of the most difficult skeptical lands to traverse. Society as a Lie Not only lying may be seen as the outcome of self-deception, perhaps an involuntary outcome. Once we broaden our definition for what a lie may be, we come to see that lies are deep-seated in our society. Then, we did something shocking; we made it a democracy, the first in the world. People thought it was crazy, this American experiment, but we proved it could work. Unfortunately there was a problem brewing – slavery! It ended up causing a great civil war, the North pitted against the South. We got through it and in the end the nation was reunited and freedom for all prevailed. Women still had some problems, though, and after nearly one hundred years of protesting they finally received the same rights as men as they got the right to vote. Our ideals of freedom were then tested outside our boundaries. We got involved in World War II as we helped to purge the world of the atrocities that the Nazis inflicted. We helped in the Korean and Vietnam Wars in their struggle for freedom and equality. After a long Cold War, we were successful in our efforts to get the Soviet Union to end communism and tear down the Berlin Wall. We also got involved in the First Gulf War as we worked to get the Iraqis out of Kuwait and restabilize the country. Around the World in a Heart Shaped Balloon When I was a little girl I adored going to the movies. I especially loved movies with a romantic plot, and a happy ending. As a child, I remember sitting in the theatre and being mesmerized by everything that was happening on the screen. Films like The Little Mermaid, Aladdin, and Beauty and the Beast made a concrete impression on my mind. Even at such a young age I loved the romance of these stories. The thought of one day being carried off by a handsome prince was a very fascinating concept for me as a little girl. Beauty and the Beast was my favorite. My grandparents took me to see it for the first time. After that, I was hooked. I got anyone I could think of to take me to the movie theatre. That year for my birthday I received everything Beauty and the Beast. I received a comforter, sheets, pillowcases, posters, a Beauty and the Beast lamp, even a night light! I was in heaven. Now that I think about it, my family may have gone a bit over the top, but at the time I was the happies t kid on the entire block. That year we painted my walls light pink, and I had a white bunk bed, and white furniture, and everything else was Beauty and the Beast. This was just the beginning of my love affair with fairy tale romance. In the years following my Beauty and the Beast craze I went through a number of different phases. Each one very different, but all of them centered around romance. There was a period of time where I loved movies like Disney's Robin Hood, and Ever After. All the different tellings of the mystical King Arthur story, which we’d been studying in school, captivated me. And, for a brief time I became mildly obsessed with the Medieval Times, and magical romance. The Shakespearian play â€Å"A Mid Summer Night’s Dream† is filled with magic and romance. It became the inspiration for me to plan out a mural on an entire wall of my room. I took a pencil, and began to sketch out my vision. A forrest scene with brightly colored fairies surrounding the marriage of the beautiful Fairy Queen to a half man half donkey creature. On the opposite side I wanted to paint the two love sick couples in the play sleeping in the grass beneath the trees.

I must admit it is easier for me to choose eating junk food. It may seem yummy and delicious, but its not. Almost every single piece of junk food is either full with fat or artificial flavorings. Did you know that the McDonalds fries contain 610 calories and 29 grams of fat? If you ate a Burger King, meal that contains 1,800 calories, it would take you nearly 6 hours of intense bicycle riding to burn away the calories. The average American kid eats at McDonalds at least one time each month. Teenagers drink around the average of 760 cans of soda per year. And not only does junk food just add fat and other unwanted substances to your body, it also harms you. Obesity is the second cause of death in America. The consumption of sodas has increased the risk of diabetes. Junk food is the major cause of most heart diseases or failures. Junk food causes high cholesterol, which causes long-term damage to your liver. Wow, pretty scary right? Ways to decrease junk food consumption would be the next time when you are rummaging through your refrigerator stop and choose the vegetable section. Pick a banana, or apple. Or leave junk food off-limits until special days or weekends. There are multiple ways, but the biggest way is the next time something sugary is about to go into your mouth, stop and think about all the negative sides. Because not only does junk food affect your weight, it affects your future.

Jackie Elliot is seen as a traditional man with anti feminist views. he sees that boys should be tough whilst girls should be more placid. Throughout the film Billy Elliot, the directer has created the character Jackie Elliot, a widowed father feeling the grief of the recent lose of his wife. This essay suggests that the grief could be a factor of how Jackie goes about supporting his son. The time that this film is set, is in the mid 80s. It could be that people who do not keep to the social norm are discriminated against, which is a different circumstance in todays society, where people are very unique and most people value eachother’s individuality. In the town of Durham, the community has the same expectations as Jackie with gender based traditions and this may have influenced him to think this way. When Billy is taken to the boxing gym by his father, he finds out that he doesn’t really like the idea of being a boxer once he steps into the ring for the first time. Billy knows his father must really want Billy to get good at this tough sport, because in this family, that is stricken with poverty; his father still manages to pay for billy’s lessons and does want him to achieve. â€Å"they were my dad’s gloves, you’d better take better care of them† Jackie and his father were obviously unable to achieve from boxing, he’s putting his last hope in Billy. Billy is aware of how his family and the community feel about boys doing ballet and has alot of courage to put their thoughts aside and just do the thing he loves. Upon finding out about Billy’s dancing. Jackie becomes enraged and expresses views of homophobic, Billy is determined to keep on dancing. It is not until Jackie actually sees Billy dance for the first time, that he realises that dancing might well and trully be his son’s future. He sees that Billy does have talent and lowers himself into going back to work just so he can afford to take Billy to London for his audition himself. â€Å"It is what mum would have wanted†, throughout the film, you watch as Jackie  grieves for his dead wife, in that he hates Billy playing his mother’s piano. Billy must have inherited his interest in music and dance from his mother which is probably why Jackie must have hated it at first; Billy was like his mother and it reminded Jackie of her too much. He gives into his pain by selling jewelry for his son. Jackie is most proud of his son, when at the end of the film. Billy dances out onto a big stage to perform â€Å"swanlake†. It takes Jackie’s breathe away. Overall through this film, we see Jackie, a father who does love his son. Aside from hgis traditional and antifeminist beliefs, Jackie was able to come through with great support for his son.
